DIY Challenge 02: Sensory-Friendly DIY Stress Ball

Goal: Create a customizable, sensory-friendly stress ball using common household items to help with focus, relaxation, or sensory regulation.

Materials Needed:

  • 1 balloon (latex or non-latex, depending on allergies)

  • Filling material:

    • Flour, rice, or cornstarch for a soft texture

    • Orbeez, beads, or dried beans for a firmer, squishier feel

  • A funnel (or a plastic bottle with the bottom cut off as a makeshift funnel)

  • A spoon

  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Stretch the balloon: Blow air into it gently, then let the air out—this makes it easier to fill.

  2.  Insert the funnel into the balloon’s neck: If you don’t have a funnel, cut the bottom off a plastic bottle and use that as a DIY funnel.

  3. Slowly pour in the filling material: Use a spoon to help guide it into the funnel. Shake or tap the funnel to prevent clogging. If using flour or cornstarch, squeeze the balloon gently as you go to distribute the material evenly.

  4. Tie the balloon securely: Once the balloon is full (but not overstuffed), tie a knot at the top to seal it.

  5. Double-layer (Optional but recommended!): Cut the neck off a second balloon and stretch it over the first one for extra durability. This prevents leaks and adds firmness.

  6. Personalize it: Decorate your stress ball with permanent markers, stickers, or even a textured cloth wrap for an extra sensory element.

  7. Test & adjust: Squeeze it and see how it feels! If you like a different texture, try another filling.

Challenge Element:

  • Texture Experimentation: Make multiple stress balls with different fillings and compare their feel. Which one do you like best?

  • Share & Reflect: Describe how your stress ball helps you—does it improve focus, relieve stress, or just feel nice?
