DIY Challenge 01: The Ultimate Sanctuary Challenge
Goal: Design the perfect sanctuary that works for YOU! Whether you need it for relaxation, focus, sensory relief, or winding down, this challenge helps you craft a personalized sensory-friendly environment for decompression and mental health.
Instructions:
Pick a location: Your sanctuary can be a whole room, a cozy corner, or even just a designated chair. If space is limited, think about how to make a temporary or portable setup.
Think about your sensory needs:
Lighting: Do you prefer dim, soft lighting, natural light, or colorful LED lights?
Textures: Do you want soft pillows, weighted blankets, or a firmer seat?
Sound: Would you like absolute silence, white noise, nature sounds, or soft instrumental music?
Scents & Air Quality: Do certain smells help or overwhelm you? Consider essential oils, candles, or fresh air.
Gather your comfort items:
Soft items (blankets, stuffed animals, fidget tools, a favorite sweater)
Entertainment (books, puzzles, coloring materials, a gaming setup)
Hydration & Snacks (a water bottle, tea, light snacks)
Personalize it! Add decorations or practical elements that make the space truly yours. Some ideas:
Posters or art that calms or inspires you
A dedicated storage bin or organizer for supplies
A desk setup with a low-stimulation work zone
Test it out! Spend at least 10-15 minutes in your space and see how it feels. Do any elements need adjusting? Does it feel safe, cozy, and stress-free?
Challenge Element:
Bonus Round – The Portable Sanctuary: Not everyone can set up a permanent space, so create a toolkit or travel-friendly setup. Fill a bag with small items that help regulate your senses and carry pieces that make you happy, like noise-canceling earbuds, a stress ball, a handheld video game console, a calming playlist, or a small blanket.
